👁️🍗👁️ The Hard Way VR

💡 Summary:

How should KFC train a new generation of youths / employees to understand thier commitment to quality food? Lock them in a Saw-like VR kitchen with an obsessive Colonel Sanders looking over & berating them until they learn to make chicken his way. The right way. ‘The Hard Way’...

Every serious game needs an extremely serious & dark trailer with serious key art & serious music. We had no choice but to make a serious trailer of our own featuring a serious cover of the 1967 Tommy James & The Shondells song "I think we're alone now"

Here are some spooky screenshots from the game...

The team trained with KFC's head chef Bob in Louisville, learning & documenting the proper “Hard Way” cooking technique, then we got about turning it into an effective training & unforgettable [read: terrifying] time.

This was my first time crafting a VR game, so I jumped in first by acting out the game as we came up with it, then drawing storyboards that went to concept artists that went to 3D modelers & animators that went to Unity developers, etc., etc...

We improvised so much as we went, like realizing: if folks could pick up raw chicken from the counter they could also throw raw chicken across the room, & we needed a way to bring it back.

Of all the options, the stupidest by far was that a painting of Colonel Sanders could have lazer tractor beams in it’s eyes, able to catch mulitple pieces of chicken mid air & return them to the counter without getting them dirty on the floor. Food safety FTW!

So that’s what we made...

In only 6 months we crafted the entire thing from scratch, in house. We partnered with designers, concept artists, & expert 3D modelers to create all the props & the hyper-detailed environments.

Our engineers worked directly in Unity to develop the immersive experience for the Oculus Rift platform, complete with 3D spatial sound design & a dynamic soundtrack that changes depending on a player’s actions or in-game situation.

We promoted the heck out of it...

The process was unbelievable...

As folks reviewed progress in headset I would steal selfies—with my bosses, colleagues, famlily, clients, & even Colonel Sanders...
