📍 Dwell Stuff™:
For 25 years, Dwell magazines have been the gold standard for showcasing modern living, architecture & design, yet their digital home felt uninsipiring & out of date...

Dwell stuff 1/1

🏡 A modern digital remodel

💡 Summary:

We helped Dwell envision a completely new online experience, helping readers, advertisers, & publishers alike. It was about decluttering, adding utility, & making the experience as elevated & beautiful as the homes that make the magazine covers.

🗓️ When:    😍 For:
2015         Dwell (via Instrument)

There’s a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright quote that guided us: “Form & function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.” Everything was airy, simple, purposeful, & beautiful, leaning into reduction & the magical power of tidying up.

Here’s a sample of the digital brand guidelines we produced, attempting to put these principles to use...

Transition” is one of those words that architects use way more than other professions. As we approached the site, crafting “elevated transitions” became a guiding principle for UX, visual design, & motion. When everything is within reach & highly considered, moving through the space can be a pleasure...

Minimalism” was obviously another principle for us...

I was super inspired (still am) by womenswear brand Proenza Shouler only using one chunky typeface, unifying & simplifying into a consistent, bold vision. This ‘less is more’ aproach to our work let Dwell get out of the way, acting like modern art gallery presenting the amazing homes, spaces, & products simply & without fuss...

👋 My role:

Concept development, Art Direction, UX & UI design, motion direction, prototype direction, crafting Dwells digital advertising strategy & development of sales tools for them.

📈 Result:
After we developed the concept, advertising strategy, & designed / built a complete prototype, we partnered with the in-house engineering team at Dwell & handed it over for them to complete. This work continues to inspire, & it’s DNA can be seen throughout thier digital products.

🙋‍♂️ PS:
You never really know your clients until you climb on their logo (with the amazing Jessie White), or get kicked out of the Ace Hotel rooftop pool with Dwell founder Lara Hedberg Deam & her fancy design friends.
